Dr. Prathapasinghe A. Gamika (Dr.Gamika in shorten) was born on 2nd March 1971. He attended Thurstan College, Colombo, Sri Lanka for his secondary education. He obtained his first degree; BVSc (Bachelor of Veterinary Science) from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka in 1998. He is so passionate about animals and this trait of him compelled him to be an inventor. During his undergraduate period, he carried out many experiments to introduce new devices for animals that were not available in the market. His experiments succeeded and he was able to introduce 19 inventions to the world. Out of them, 05 inventions have been patented under Sri Lanka National Intellectual Property Office while 03 inventions are pending patents that have been filed. He was able to win 12 local and international awards for his inventions. These awards include Presidential Awards (GOLD Award) in Sri Lanka (The highest award for an investor in Sri Lanka), awards from the International Exhibition of Inventions, New Techniques and Products held in GENEVA, Switzerland three times and an award from the International Exhibition of Ideas, Inventions and New Products held in NUREMBERG, Germany 1998.
Later he joined with Dr. Jayasooriya to carry out collaborative research and this synergetic approach resulted in the establishment of Vetgrow.
Dr.Gamika obtained his Master’s Degree in Biochemistry from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada in 2005 and PhD in Animal Science from St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre, University of Manitoba, Canada in 2008. He is a senior lecturer in the Department of Livestock and Avian Sciences, Faculty of Livestock, Fisheries and Nutrition, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. He is also a Director of PetsVcare Animal Hospitals, Colombo, Sri Lanka (www.petsvcare.lk) which is the leading veterinary care provider in the country, Wayamba University Business Incubation Center and Business Express Company Limited. He is also a member of the Editorial Board, Journal of Agricultural Research and Fisheries (JARF) http://apexjournals.org/jarf/index.html and editor in chief of Wayamba Journal of Animal Science www.wayambajournal.com .
He served as a Member of the Board of Governors of the University of Vocational Technology (2010 – 2015), Assistant Commissioner of Sri Lanka Inventors Commission (2009 – 2015) and a Member of the Mirror Committee on Social Responsibility, Sri Lanka Standards Institute (2009 – 2010).
